About Museo Cabañas

The museum's facilities are those of the Hospice that owes its name to Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo, who intended to build a shelter for orphans, the elderly, and the destitute. With neoclassical architecture, it is one of the most emblematic buildings in Jalisco and Mexico, where important political and social events took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. It went from being an orphanage to a military barracks during the War of Independence, a school, and, by government decree starting in 1980, a space dedicated to the dissemination of the arts, becoming a museum.

One of the emblematic elements of the Museo Cabañas are the frescoes painted by José Clemente Orozco at the invitation of the Government of Jalisco, highlighting El Hombre de Fuego (The Man of Fire) in its central dome, considered by some to be the muralist's masterpiece.

In 1997, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
