Animated Projects in FOCINE

The FOCINE results are out and we’re very excited to recognize so many projects from our community among those selected!

Here is a list of all the ones we identified:

  • Arbor, by Valentino Lasso, the winning project of Shortway 2022. It had a residency in Annecy to continue its development. After a period of work and redefinition, Valentino resumed the project and this year it became one of the FOCINE award-winning projects.
  • Ay Mijo by Getse Pérez, a short film selected in Shortway 2025 that, due to its subject matter, generated significant controversy on social media when we announced it.
  • The Origin of Experience, an animated documentary feature film by Pedro "Zulu" González that was selected for the Ideatoon Bootcamp in 2021. The project has had a long trajectory since then: agreements with Hampa Studio, selected for Ibermedia Next in 2024 to develop its teaser, and currently in production.
  • Hanta — an animated feature film directed by Emilio Ramos, a co-production between Mexico, Spain, and Argentina. With a spectacular aesthetic outside conventional boundaries (and therefore a difficult project to develop and produce), it has also had a long journey (it produced a teaser several years ago, had a residency in Annecy, received support from Ibermedia Next, and was presented at Pixelatl just this past September).
  • Josefina and the Invincibles by the beloved Jorge A. Estrada, director of La Revolución de Juan Escopeta and collaborator with Pixelatl in different years;
  • Death According to Valentina by Nuria Menchaca, Ariel Award winner for Best Animated Short with Dalia Sigue Aquí (2019);
  • Latente by Susana López Arrazola, director of Trastierro (released in 2021 and part of the film showcase we curated for Annecy 2023) and Exile (2022), which was part of the Pixelatl Official Selection 2022.
  • Naukrates by the beloved César Cepeda, director of Kraneo Estudio and creative partner of Pixelatl 2019.

Additionally, “In Continuity” grants were approved for the projects San Tadeo by Elisa Giménez Valdés Fernández Posada, selected in Shortway 2024; and Renegado by Alex Castellanos, selected in Shortway 2022.

Other animated projects that also received support include the short film El telar de Hilaria by Cinthya Lizbeth Toledo Cabrera and the short film Jidhir (raíz) by Diego Enrique Martínez García, The Place Where Childhood Lives by Lyann Mariel Zamora.

Congratulations to everyone who received support!
