Masquerade balls became popular in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as a derivative of carnival time, where social roles were temporarily suspended. In the indigenous communities of the Americas, masks, headdresses, and costumes were related to displays of status at social and ceremonial events.
This year at Pixelatl, we will turn our closing party into a Masquerade Ball. If you have a mask, bring it to the festival. If you want to design a special one, you can! If you have no idea how to make one (or want to add an artistic and creative touch), participate in one of the two mask workshops that will be held during the festival.
